TOEFL iBT READING TEST

The reading section measures your ability to read and understand academic texts in English.

The reading test consists of three passages and you will have 54 minutes to read the passages and answer the questions.

**In the actual test you might receive 4 passages; in this case you will have 72 minutes to read the passages and answer the questions.

9 DIFFERENT TYPES OF QUESTIONS

1.Factual information questions

Aim: test your ability to understand specific details from a given text and summarize that meaning.

Task: select the sentence that best summarizes the information given by the author about a certain topic present in the text. They generally focus on the “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, and “why” as explained by the author.

2.Negative factual information questions

Aim: test your ability to accurately determine what information was not conveyed in a given passage.

Task: select the sentence that does not contain information given by the author about a certain topic present in the text.

3.Vocabulary questions

Aim: test your knowledge in regards to words frequently used in academic contexts and expand your general vocabulary.

Task: select the word that is closest in meaning to the one mentioned in the question.

4.Inference questions

Aim: test your ability to make logical assumptions and connections by using the information in the passage in order to come up with a new conclusion.

Task: determine what information a certain paragraph or passage infers.

5.Rhetorical purpose questions or function questions

Aim: test your ability to identify the main point of a paragraph and understand how the referenced information is related to that point.

Task: find the answer that best explains the reason behind the mentioned section of the text.

6. Insert text questions

Aim: test your ability to understand the internal logic of a paragraph taking into account the grammatical connections between the various sentences that make up a text.

Task: You will notice four places, marked A, B, C, and D. You will be asked to determine where a sentence would best fit within the text in order to maintain its logical coherence.

7.Sentence simplification questions

Aim: test your ability to understand the meaning of a given passage and find alternative ways of expressing the same meaning by using different words.

Task: find the phrase that conveys the same meaning as the referenced passage in the given text.

8.Reference questions

Aim: test your ability to understand what word the given pronoun refers to.

Task: select the word that is substituted by the referenced pronoun.

9.Fill in Table questions

Aim: test your ability to summarize the information given in a text and extract the main ideas presented by the author.

Task: You will be given an introductory sentence for your summary and you will be asked to select three different sentences that correspond to the main points made by the author.
